In the 21st century, the era of the great colonial empires is over and most former colonies have achieved formal sovereignty. Yet, the Global North´s economic, political, and cultural hegemony over the Global South has not been broken. Instead, it has been reshaped in the terms of a global capitalist economy which is accompanied by paternalizing development aid.

The Global Theory Club is a reading circle that has been active since February 2023. We are a diverse and international group consisting of GA-activists as well as politically interested individuals, and our goal is to sharpen our understanding of global power disbalances. Everybody is welcome and no prior knowledge is required.

We meet every 2nd week to discuss a text not exceeding 30 – 40 pages. Our pensum is chosen collectively and covers both classics as well as newer contribution in the broader spectrum of postcolonial theory, global economy, and development aid.

Literature:

So far, we have been reading:

  • Amnesty International: Israel’s Apartheid Against Palestinians (2022)
  • Césaire, Aimé: Discourse on Colonialism (1950)
  • Freire, Paulo: Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1961)
  • Hickel, Jason: The Divide. A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions (2017)
  • Rodney, Walter: How Europe Underdeveloped Africa (1972)

Currently, we are discussing Frantz Fanon: The Wretched of the Earth (1961)
