The King´s killers – The development in Swaziland and the bloody crackdown on activists

Developments in the small autocratic kingdom of Swaziland or Eswatini, as King Msawati III has renamed the country, are deeply worrying. In his New Year’s speech, the King promised that all democracy activists would be eradicated during 2023. A few hours later, human rights lawyer and leader of the democratic movement was killed by three men in his house.

The murder of Thulani Maseko heralds further violence and escalation of the political crisis that started with the popular uprising in June 2021. An uprising that, with demands for social and economic ossification, also demanded democratic reforms. More than 100 were killed and 1000 wounded when the king deployed the military. Despite the very savage behavior of the regime, the protests and the mobilization for the abolition of the autocracy continued. The regime’s violence, and total rejection of any form of dialogue with its opponents, has led to civilian groups arming themselves and attacking the security forces.

At the beginning of this year, mercenaries arrived from Rwanda, and a South African mercenary company has been put at the head of the announced crackdown on democracy activists.
Global Action has for many years supported the struggle of democracy and social movements in Swaziland. Our partners are the groups that the King wants to eradicate from the face of the earth.

This evening you can hear three activists’ take on what will happen in Swaziland after the king’s speech. Due to security, their names will not be public. Among the questions that will be raised is the use of violence, how we strengthen solidarity with Swaziland, how to continue the pressure on the regime from inside and outside and not least how we increase the pressure on South Africa and SADC to isolate the regime in Swaziland.

Udviklingen i det lille enevældige kongedømme, Swaziland eller Eswatini, som kongen Msawati III har omdøbt landet, er stærkt bekymrende. I sin nytårstale lovede kongen, at alle demokrati aktivister ville være udryddet i løbet af 2023. Få timer efter blev en lederne menneskerettighedsadvokat og leder af demokrati bevægelsen, dræbt af tre mand i sit hus.

Mordet på Thulani Maseko varsler yderligere vold og optrapning af den politiske krise der startede med det folkeligt oprør i juni 2021. Et oprør der med krav om sociale og økonomiske forbedringer, også krævede demokratiske reformer. Mere end 100 blev dræbt og 1000 såret, da kongen satte militæret ind. På trods af den meget voldelige fremfærd fra regimets side, fortsatte protesterne og mobiliseringen for afskaffelse af enevælden. Regimets vold, og totale afvisning af nogen form for dialog, med sine modstandere, har medført at civile grupper har bevæbnet sig, og er gået til angreb på sikkerhedsstyrkerne.

I starten af i år ankom der lejesoldater fra Rwanda, og et sydafrikansk lejesoldat, virksomhed er sat i spidsen for den bebude klapjagt på demokrati aktivister.

Denne aften kan du høre tre aktivisternes bud på hvad der kommer til at ske i Swaziland, efter kongens tale. Pga. sikkerhed, vil deres navne ikke være offentlige. Bladt de spørgsmål der vil blive rejst er brug af vold, hvordan vi styrker solidariteten med Swaziland, hvordan man fortsætter presset på regimet indefra og udefra og ikke mindst hvordan vi øger presset på Sydafrika og SADC for at de isolerer regimet i Swaziland.
