The Situation in Uganda – Is It Possible to Win Over Museveni?

Meet three political youth leaders from Uganda's opposition

Hvornår: 27. maj 2026 | 19:00
Hvor: Global Aktion, Kompagnistræde 32A, 1208 København K

Meet three young leaders from Uganda’s opposition movement, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and hear their perspectives on the future after losing both the parliamentary and presidential elections.

For nearly four decades, Uganda has been ruled by President Yoweri Museveni and his National Resistance Movement. Over the years, political space has steadily narrowed, while opposition parties, journalists, activists, and civil society organisations have faced increasing repression.

The event is open to everyone and will take place on Wednesday, 27 May at 19:00 at Global AktionAttachment.png, Kompagnistræde 32A, 1208 Copenhagen K.

Speakers:
• Adepo Francis, National Youth Chairperson (FDC Youth League)
• Tulengera Emmanuel, National Youth Secretary for Foreign Affairs (FDC Youth League)
• Nankunda Mandela, Deputy Secretary General (FDC Youth League)

Once again, the opposition party Forum for Democratic Change failed to defeat Museveni and the ruling establishment. But the crisis in Uganda is not only about elections.

At the same time, the country’s political development is deeply concerning. New laws are further restricting civic space and freedom of expression. Arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and politically motivated charges have become commonplace. Human rights defenders and opposition activists face harassment and surveillance, while media censorship is tightening and independent journalism is increasingly under pressure.

Many young Ugandans are struggling with unemployment, rising living costs, corruption, and growing frustration over the lack of democratic change. Yet despite repression and political setbacks, new generations of activists continue to organise and resist.

So, is there still hope for Uganda?
Can democratic change happen through elections — or will it require a different kind of struggle?

The meeting will be held in English, and admission is free.
